Pop-Up StoryWalk®

Two of the best things in life, reading and walking. Put these beauties together and we get StoryWalk®!

StoryWalk® is an initiative to encourage early literacy by taking children’s picture books to places where children play. Children can enjoy walking along and reading the pages of the book while being outside and being active, it is the perfect mix for learning.

Our Pop-Up StoryWalk® has been a fantastic pilot for our main StoryWalk® project which is being worked on as I type. Our latest StoryWalk® has been up at the Hawea Playground, a wonderful story called “The Fairies Night before Christmas”. Children could pick up fairy colouring sheets and a scavenger hunt for the page from the Hawea Library or if after hours the Hawea Produce Stand next to the library.

The neat thing about our Pop-Up StoryWalk® is that it's been able to travel to different locations since it was created; Wanaka Sport and Rec, Peter Fraser Park Hawea, the Dinosaur Park in Wanaka, and the next stop is the Wānaka Homestead Park to celebrate Parks Week.

Keep your eyes peeled for Pop-Up StoryWalk® in a park near you!

The Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.”
