An evening with Roka Hurihia Ngarimu-Cameron - Master Weaver @ Wānaka Library

Roka Hurihia Ngarimu-Cameron MNZM is an internationally recognised taonga (treasure) in Māori arts – a distinguished Māori weaver. Her Master's degree from the School of Art Te Kura Matatini Ki Otago saw her focus on the combination of traditional Māori weaving and loom weaving and included a solo exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. The exhibition was titled Tōku Haerega/My Journey.  

Roka has been a lecturer at the University of Otago and now works with students through Southern Institute of Technology. She has published 2 books; Tōku Haerenga - a transformation of Māori cloaks, and Ngā kākahu: change & exchange. Roka has also published in journals such as Textile Cloth and Culture. Roka was awarded the New Zealand order of Merit for services to Māori.

Wānaka Library is extremely privileged to welcome Roka Hurihia Ngarimu-Cameron to speak about her life's work, and we are honoured to host a sample of her work in our library.
